Living in The Netherlands: setting up a bank account
For those moving to The Netherlands for the first time, an important point to consider are the legally required documents needed to open a Dutch bank account. These are:
A personal Citizen Service Number (Burgerservicenummer, BSN): This is a social-fiscal number issued to all Dutch tax residents and is usually arranged at your local municipal building;
Proof of address: A utility bill, rental contract or extract from the personal records database (Basisregistratie personen, BPR)
Proof of income: Needed when opening accounts with a credit facility, for example an employment contract.
In addition to the above, you will also need:
- Passport or other internationally recognised identification document
- Residence permit if applicable
Appointments for opening a bank account can be made in advance, and major bank branches in the cities or located in a business district often have a dedicated English speaking contact person.

It is possible to use non-Dutch bank cards in The Netherlands and most ATM’s will allow you to select a language. Credit cards however are not widely used in The Netherlands and cash or debit cards are the most widely used and accepted forms of payment.
